Make Room for the Holidays

The holidays have a way of making you look at your home and wondering where you're going to put all the extra guests. Don't worry, we aren't going to try to convince you to move to a bigger house. We thought we'd offer a few changes to help you make better use of the space you already have. But...if you've been wishing for a home with more room to gather, the holidays can be a good time to think about the size and layout of your next home.

First, let's see where you might be able to rearrange. Oversized chairs, extra end tables, and decorative pieces that take up floor space, especially in living rooms and dining areas can be temporarily moved or stored which will open up the space you need for guests.

If you do a lot of hosting you might consider investing in furniture that serves more than one purpose. An ottoman with storage, a dining table with extension leaves, or nesting tables can give you more room when you need it without crowding your home the rest of the year.

Now, if your dining table can't accommodate everyone, one thing you could do is add a folding table that can be covered with a coordinating tablecloth. You can also borrow extra chairs from neighbors or family members rather than purchasing seating you'll rarely use.

If the dining room itself is busting at the seams or you don't have one, arrange seating areas so people can comfortably eat and talk without blocking obvious spaces. Use nearby rooms for different activities. For example, a playroom can become a space for younger children, while a finished basement can give adults somewhere to relax after dinner.

Speaking of finished basements, sun rooms or other flex rooms, make sure you put these spaces to good use. Rather an office becoming a coat room, purchase an inexpensive coat/grament rack and extra hangers, now that room is available for games or activities. Even outdoor space has potential, make a fire on your patio and provide cozy blankets during milder weather. Some guests may appreciate the fresh air experience!

Lastly, never underestimate clearing away everyday clutter. Set aside a little time before the holidays to organize entryways, clear kitchen counters and make room in the refrigerator.

These advanced preparations help your home feel less crowded when everyone arrives. They also make it easier for you to enjoy the gathering instead of spending the entire day trying to keep everything organized.

Remember the true meaning of the holidays is to spend time with the people you love it's not having a picture-perfect house. The ultimate goal is to create a place where people feel welcome and everyone has a seat at the table.
